Layers of Neal

by Mark McDermott

There is a guy in El Segundo who builds motorcycles in his warehouse lair in Smoky Hollow, reinventing Harleys and other vintage bikes. He's a fourth generation local and looks like it. There is also a guy in El Segundo who is a fine arts painter and sculptor, an artist who has been the subject of academic papers...

A New View at El Segundo Middle School

By Chelsea Sektnan

The new mural taking shape at El Segundo Middle School is muralist Kopyeson’s handiwork, but it carries the fingerprints of an entire eighth-grade class. It is the first mural he has painted at a school, where students will pass his work each day and, he hopes...

Playing with mud and fire in El Segundo

by Jessie Lee Cederblom

There is something wonderfully unexpected about finding a ceramics studio in a city built around aerospace.  Outside, El Segundo is busy thinking about satellites, aircraft and technology.  Inside Standard Ceramics, people are sitting at pottery wheels with their...

One Man Wonder

by Gavin Heaney

Wais Katubadrau, known more locally as "Wais," is a one-man music-making machine. Like a reggae jukebox, he performs a seamless and endless playlist of sing-alongs and memorable mashups in his own signature island style, while peppering in his own original heartfelt songs. Strumming guitar while tapping...

Stories from over the years

After spurring the arts movement in El Segundo, the most unconventional art museum in the nation sets its sights on Lawndale

By Alex Khatchadourian

The dense blocks of Hawthorne Boulevard nestled between Marine Avenue and Rosecrans Boulevard are littered with the familiar businesses that have long inhabited the distinct six-lane roadway, which stretches over twenty miles, coursing from Palos Verdes through Torrance, Lawndale, Hawthorne, and Inglewood. A bustling Jack in the Box, a two-story WSS shoe store, a few dental and medical offices, clusters of insurance and tax service companies, budget motels, and nail or beauty salons with hand-painted...

Comedy and BBQ go hand-in-chop in the life of Dave Williamson. Now his festival will combine them.

By Mark McDermott

One day last June, Dave Williamson started getting calls and texts about pink flamingos. “What time can I pick up these pink flamingos?” read one text. Williamson was perplexed. He does like beer, quite a lot, so he thought maybe there was a connection. “Man, what did I do yesterday?” he remembers wondering. It didn’t take very many messages for Williamson to figure out something was up. He may be from El Segundo, by way of Florida, but he...

Spooky Harris is not afraid

By Joel Peter Elliott

Recognition as an artist didn’t come until later in life for Dave Harris. It was only after he had finally settled into painting as the medium of choice that his creative endeavors began to take on a life of their own. In that space he found a reason to take himself and the work seriously in a way that he hadn’t done before. Dave and painting got along, and Spooky was born.
