Where the Water Meets the Land

by Rachel Reeves

Interviewing Damian Fulton is like studying one of his paintings: the first thing you notice is there’s a lot going on. He talks fluidly, articulately, and fast, pinballing ideas that span decades and genres and Southern California subcultures. Sometimes he’ll stop himself...

Ferehawk’s foray

by Alex Khatchadourian

Before the trash trucks start clamoring down the residential streets and the typical mayhem of Los Angeles morning traffic ensues, Bill Ferehawk quietly leaves his Mid City home to wander Pico Boulevard. Wielding a window-washing pole with a digital camera strapped to the end, Ferehawk approaches...

Emilia’s return

by Rachel Reeves

Emilia Thompson is in between. She’s 21, a recent college graduate, and back in her parents’ El Segundo home, sleeping in the bedroom she grew up in, with stuffed bunnies on the bed and bookshelf. She’s in one of those transitional seasons, when everything around is familiar but you know you’ve...

The Tom Nolan Band shakes it off

by Gavin Heaney

The stage is packed with performers and the sound spills out onto the dance floor. A tambourine shakes, horns blaze, a bass slides, the guitar wails and drums dazzle as the singer moans deep from under his fedora. This is a movement urging you to ...

Maps

Printed maps will be available at the Headquarter venue and most participating businesses. Digital maps will also be released a few days before the event.

Stories from over the years

After spurring the arts movement in El Segundo, the most unconventional art museum in the nation sets its sights on Lawndale

By Alex Khatchadourian

The dense blocks of Hawthorne Boulevard nestled between Marine Avenue and Rosecrans Boulevard are littered with the familiar businesses that have long inhabited the distinct six-lane roadway, which stretches over twenty miles, coursing from Palos Verdes through Torrance, Lawndale, Hawthorne, and Inglewood. A bustling Jack in the Box, a two-story WSS shoe store, a few dental and medical offices, clusters of insurance and tax service companies, budget motels, and nail or beauty salons with hand-painted...

Comedy and BBQ go hand-in-chop in the life of Dave Williamson. Now his festival will combine them.

By Mark McDermott

One day last June, Dave Williamson started getting calls and texts about pink flamingos. “What time can I pick up these pink flamingos?” read one text. Williamson was perplexed. He does like beer, quite a lot, so he thought maybe there was a connection. “Man, what did I do yesterday?” he remembers wondering. It didn’t take very many messages for Williamson to figure out something was up. He may be from El Segundo, by way of Florida, but he...

Spooky Harris is not afraid

By Joel Peter Elliott

Recognition as an artist didn’t come until later in life for Dave Harris. It was only after he had finally settled into painting as the medium of choice that his creative endeavors began to take on a life of their own. In that space he found a reason to take himself and the work seriously in a way that he hadn’t done before. Dave and painting got along, and Spooky was born.
